Buying the Right Mail Order Pies

You are probably used to buying all kinds of things by mail order – clothes, electronic goods, household appliances, to name just a few. According to some sources, the first mail order business was set up in Newtown, mid-Wales as early as 1861. Retailing has never been the same since.

Things have come a long way since the second half of the 19th century, of course, and mail order pies have now been added to the long list of products.

In this day and age, the process of ordering is made all the more straight forward and customer-friendly thanks to your ability to choose what you want from the manufacturer’s website, make your payment and simply sit back and wait for your delicious, handmade, traditional pies to be delivered to your door.

This makes buying the right mail order pies reassuringly certain that you get exactly what you see on the website. Along with professionally taken photographs of the pies in all their glory you may read a detailed description of the quality ingredients and care that goes into handcrafting the food.

Pies are such versatile food and those handmade to traditional recipes may contain meat (such as chicken or steak), vegetables or, for a tasty dessert, fruit.

Mail order, courier delivery

In the early days of mail order, your goods were delivered by standard postal methods – the Royal Mail.

Greater certainty and security is ensured through the delivery of mail order pies not by post but by special courier services. Handmade, quality pies are perishable food stuffs, after all, so you want to rest assured that delivery takes place as quickly as possible on the day indicated when you order.

Since your purchase is by mail order you may generally choose whatever delivery address best suits you – at home, at work or some other place (where you may be holding a special event or celebration, for example).

Some pie shops use an overnight courier service, to ensure that pies ordered one day are delivered the day following their collection by the delivery service. In many cases, deliveries are made on the same day each week, so you may be certain of the date on which your pies arrive.

Even so, you might be out when the delivery is made and, in that case, a specially insulated package keeps the food sufficiently cooled until you retrieve it from your doorstep – or a neighbour if it is left there.

Once you take the pies out of their packaging, it is usual to keep them chilled in the fridge until you want to eat them – which for fresh, handmade pies needs to be within the next four days.

If you want to eat them later than this, mail order pies can typically be frozen (for a maximum of, say, six months) on the day you receive them, and then thoroughly defrosted in your fridge when you are ready to eat them.

Buying your pies by mail order is quick, easy and reliable – you are probably going to find it difficult not to keep some in stock.

Fruity Slushy Drinks with a Twist

November 7, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

slushDuring the summer I was introduced to something I was surprised I had never tried before – alcoholic slushy drinks and cocktails.  I was surprised at how such an obvious idea to jazz up slushy drinks and make them more adult-orientated had never occurred to me before.  We all remember having slushies when we were younger don’t we?  There was a simple choice to make – would you have a red or a blue one?  I was always a red man, probably because I am a Man U supporter, but let’s not talk footie here, let’s talk slushies.

Nowadays, you don’t have to go to a café, swimming pool, leisure centre or restaurant to get your hands on a delicious slushy for a nostalgic reminder of your childhood.  Nowadays there are machines you can buy for your own home and make slushies with until your heart’s content.  If you have kids, then sure you will use them mainly for the little angels, but once the kids are in bed or if you have a BBQ or other social gathering at your home, you can have a bit of fun.

I don’t know about you, but one thing I always loved and felt as if it defined my change from being a teenager to being an adult was being able to order and drink alcoholic drinks.  Undoubtedly, for most people, the quintessential “grown-up” drink amongst the various kinds of alcoholic beverage is the cocktail.  A cocktail uniquely is kind of like a bridging gap to the sort of drinks we drank when we were younger with the harder, stronger alcoholic drinks we drink as adults.

Surely then, the ultimate adult indulgent drink would be a combination of the humble slushy with all the buzz of a cocktail.  Where should you start and what kind of slushy cocktails should you make?  The great thing about slushy cocktails is that they are as versatile as non-slushy versions.  The best way to find alcoholic drinks and slushies that work together is to just try mixing some together.  If you would like a few tips to get you started, check out the recipes below and if you are interested in purchasing a slush machine check out www.myslushmachine.co.uk for lots of great information and reviews.

The great thing about the following recipes is that you can choose to use them with a slush machine or a blender if you don’t currently own a machine.

Stormy and Dark Slushy

The great thing about this particular recipe is that you don’t need to use a slush machine if you don’t have one.  Simply blitz 2 cups of ice cubes, ½ ounce of simple syrup, 1 ounce of lime juice and 2 ounces of dark rum in a blender for at least 15 seconds.  One all the ingredients have combined pour into a tall glass and add about 1 glassful of a very sweet ginger beer and add a lime slice as garnish.

Mojito Slush

Add 3 sprigs of fresh mint, ½ ounce of lime juice, 1 ½ ounces of simple syrup, 3 ounces of white rum to a blender and blitz together with 2 cups of ice cubes and pour into a glass with mint leaves on top as a garnish.

Strawberry Lemon Vodka Slushy

Blend 2 cups of ice cubes, 4 strawberries, 1 ¾ ounces of simple syrup, 2 ounces of lemon juice and 2 ounces of vodka together and then pour into 2 glasses and add strawberry slices on top as a tasty and pretty garnish.

Bacon Desserts

bacon-dessertsAs I have mentioned on other pages on this site, including the About Me, I really love bacon in everything and anything including desserts. Although one of my favourite ways to enjoy a sweeter twist to bacon is Candied Bacon (made using brown sugar and cinnamon), however I found this site called The Republic of Bacon that has a page devoted to various recipes of bacon desserts.

There are far too many on the site that I want to try out to mention, so I thought I would just pick out a couple that really stand out to me and that are the ones I am most likely to try out first.

The idea of bacon and toffee together sounds too good not to try and there is a link and recipe for that and as one of the biggest fans of chocolate brownies on the planet – I really have to try the bacon brownies!

Besides those, the one that really stood out to me and sounded like something Heston Blumenthal would concoct in his lab was bacon ice cream. I am not the biggest fan of ice cream. I don’t love it, but don’t hate it either. I imagine though that once I tried bacon ice cream, my mind would change though ha-ha!

Although as such a big fan of bacon I wouldn’t complain about any of these recipes, I am less interested in the ones where bacon is just used as a garnish or afterthought as much as I am in the ones where bacon is really incorporated and used to baconise (that is definitely a real word, I checked and double-checked*!) whatever the dessert is.

I like the idea for instance of taking the good old classic apple pie and adding that salty, smoky baconness (also a real word*!) to it or the bacon cheesecake.

I suppose the main thing I like about all these bacon dessert recipes and the concept in general is that it’s a way to squeeze a bit more bacon into life and a great way of bridging main meals, breakfasts and lunches together with puddings and desserts.

Watch this space because when I get the time to try any of the recipes out I will undoubtedly snap some pictures to upload with a post about how I got on and most importantly whether they tasted as good as they sound.

To inspire your own exploration into bacon desserts check out the list of recipes here and be sure to send any pics or links you have of your efforts!

*I may have told a few porkies there, sorry
